Year 9 Options

Our Year 9 students will begin their Key Stage 4 program of study in Year 10.  The transition from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4 is an important event in every child’s education involving decisions regarding their curriculum and which subjects they wish to continue studying.

Students have already had an assembly on the options process and indicated to us via a google survey the subjects they are interested in studying.  Over the next 3 weeks they will also have the opportunity to attend taster sessions in subjects they have not studied before.

The process will be outlined to parents/carers at the Year 9 Options event on the 30th March 2023.  There will be a talk on the process in the Theatre at 17:30pm following which students and parents will have an opportunity to speak with subject teachers.

All students need to choose one subject from History and Geography.  Should any student wish to choose both of these subjects they are then able to do this as part of their option choices.

All students need to select one option subject from each block to study – so four options in total.  We have based the blocks on the initial findings of a survey of students indicating subjects they are the most interested in.

Students will all study Combined Science, English, Maths, core PE and PSHE. Towards the end of Year 9, students will have an entrance exam for Triple Science where if successful, students in Year 10 and 11 will be able to take the individual sciences Biology, Chemistry and Physics (worth 3 GCSE’s) as opposed to Combined Science, which is 2 GCSE’s.

Please take time to read the Curriculum Course Guide enclosed and discuss your child’s desired options. The guide contains explanations about GCSEs and vocational qualifications as well as specific subject requirements for Key Stage 4.  Decisions regarding the option choices need to be finalised by 24th April 2023 and we would ask that all forms be returned to the Academy reception for collation.
