English Curriculum Vision, Aims and Overview
At Harefield School, our English curriculum aims to cultivate confident, critical thinkers and articulate communicators. We aim to develop students’ analytical skills through a diverse range of texts, including contemporary and classic literature, poetry, and non-fiction. This exposure fosters an appreciation of language and literature while enhancing students’ understanding of context, themes, and authors’ intentions.Our curriculum prioritises the mastery of reading, writing, and spoken language, encouraging students to express their ideas effectively and creatively. Our goal is not only to prepare students for the demands of GCSE English Language and Literature but to also instil a lifelong love of reading and learning, equipping them with the skills necessary for future academic and personal success.
Key Aims of English at Harefield School:
- Demonstrate skills of enquiry, critical thinking, decision-making and analysis: Develop students’ ability to engage with alternative ideas and generate their own responses
- Enhance students’ appreciation of literature: Motivate students to explore a range of genres, styles, and themes
